What you agree to, and what we agree to, when you use The Smithy.

1. Acceptance of these terms

By using The Smithy Reader, the Grit game, or savethefae.com (together, “the Service”), operated by Glass Umbrella (“we”, “us”, “our”), you agree to these Terms. If you are a parent or guardian setting up an account for a child, you agree to them on your child's behalf as well.

2. What the Service is

The Smithy is an educational platform: a story-driven game where reading, writing, mathematics, and music are how the world works, an iOS reading app (The Smithy Reader), and the companion tools around them.

3. Who may use it

  • You must confirm you are at least 13 years old to create an account.
  • If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must consent to your use of the Service.
  • A parent or guardian account may create and manage child profiles for players under 13.
  • You are responsible for keeping your account credentials to yourself.
  • The information you give us at registration must be accurate.

4. Children's safety

  • Children under 13 cannot create their own account; a parent or guardian does, and consents.
  • Social features are off by default and require a parent to turn them on.
  • No advertising is shown to children — or to anyone else.
  • Children's personal information is anonymised in analytics.
  • Parents keep full control of their child's account and data.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the Service for any unlawful purpose;
  • try to reach parts of the Service, or other people's accounts, you are not entitled to;
  • harass, abuse, or harm other people;
  • use bots or scrapers against the Service;
  • reverse-engineer or modify the Service;
  • share your credentials with anyone who should not have them;
  • work around content moderation or safety features.

6. Purchases and subscriptions

  • The Service has free and paid tiers.
  • Purchases made inside the iOS app are handled by Apple through the App Store and are also governed by Apple's own terms. Purchases on the website are billed through Stripe.
  • Subscriptions renew until cancelled. You can cancel at any time, and access runs to the end of the period you have already paid for.
  • Founding Family pricing is locked for the lifetime of the account.
  • Refunds are handled case by case; App Store purchases are refunded by Apple under Apple's policy.

7. The App Store

If you obtained The Smithy Reader from the Apple App Store, these Terms are between you and Glass Umbrella — not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app, and is not responsible for the app or its content.

8. Intellectual property

  • The Service — its content, characters, storylines, artwork, music, and software — is the property of Glass Umbrella and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws.
  • The Village of Grit, Wisp, The Smithy, and the associated characters and lore are trademarks of Glass Umbrella.
  • You may not reproduce, distribute, or make derivative works from our content without written permission.
  • What you make — character names, in-game creations — stays yours; you grant us a licence to display it inside the Service.

9. Disclaimers

  • The Service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind.
  • We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service.
  • Educational outcomes vary. The Service supplements formal education; it does not replace it.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Glass Umbrella is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service.

11. Termination

We may suspend or end an account that breaks these Terms. You may delete your account at any time — see our support page. When an account ends, the right to use the Service ends with it, and we delete the data as described in the privacy policy.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept it, and we email registered users about material changes.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law provisions.
